Bloc Party Share New Single 'Now We Can't Be Friends,' Announce UK Record Store Tour

Bloc Party are deep into the rollout for Anatomy Of A Brief Romance, out September 11, and “Now We Can’t Be Friends” is the clearest look yet at what the record is actually about: a relationship’s full arc, beginning to heartbreak to whatever comes after. Frontman Kele Okereke has been candid that the writing draws straight from his own life, and the new single leans into that directness rather than around it — “You can have these big feelings,” he said of the song, “but you have to be aware that when they go, this is how you’ll feel and, you’ll be okay with that.” It follows earlier singles “Coming On Strong” and “Love Bombs” as the third piece of the puzzle.

Alongside the song, the band announced a string of UK record store dates for release week — Bury, Kingston, Liverpool, Nottingham, Bristol, London’s Rough Trade East, and Leeds, running September 9 through 17 — the kind of intimate, no-frills run that puts a band whose choruses were built for arenas back in rooms the size of a living room. Fitting, since a full co-headline arena tour with Interpol follows in November and December. For now, though, it’s just the four of them, a new song about the end of something, and a string of shops that still know how to throw a release-day party.
