Blonde Redhead Return With the Searching, Grief-Stricken New Single 'Blood Spilled'

Blonde Redhead surfaced this week with “Blood Spilled,” a standalone single released via section1 and the veteran New York trio’s first new music since 2023’s Sit Down for Dinner. No album has been announced alongside it — this one’s arriving purely on its own terms.

Bandleader Kazu Makino, who also made the single’s cover art, has said the song grew out of “a relentless season of loss,” and that writing it became a way of working through what death does and doesn’t take. “This song embraces our incredible edge over those who no longer have bodies,” she said, describing the track as a reflection on “the free will of our soul and body down to each and every cell.” Rather than settling into mourning, “Blood Spilled” turns outward, toward the strange privilege of still being alive and embodied.

It’s a reminder of how much gravity this band still carries more than three decades in — The Strokes covered Blonde Redhead’s 2000 track “This Is Not” at a recent Cincinnati show, unprompted testimony to a catalog that keeps finding new listeners. “Blood Spilled” is streaming now.
