Ezra Williams Returns With the Aching New Single 'Blight'

By Marcus Tidewell

Wicklow’s Ezra Williams is back with a new track, “Blight,” and it’s the kind of quietly devastating single that rewards sitting still for. Hotpress, spotlighting the song in its weekly roundup of new Irish music, called it “a deeply moving tune blending nostalgic textures with warm guitar instrumentals, profoundly evocative with the addition of the singer’s delicate vocals.”

Williams has spent the last few years building a reputation as one of Ireland’s most understated songwriters, working in a register where the arrangements stay out of the way and the voice does the heavy lifting. “Blight” continues in that vein — a song that leans on space and restraint rather than hooks, letting a slow-turning guitar figure and Williams’ hushed delivery do the emotional work.

No word yet on whether the track is a standalone single or the first signal of a larger project, but it’s out now for anyone who wants to hear one of Ireland’s quieter voices doing some of its most affecting work.
