Lily Seabird Unveils the Seven-Minute Slowcore Dream 'Portal to the Past'

Lily Seabird has shared “Portal to the Past,” the second preview of her forthcoming album Lightspheres on Their Way, out via Lame-O Records. The seven-minute alt-country/slowcore dirge follows lead single “Election Day” and landed in Paste Magazine’s “5 Songs You Need to Hear This Week” roundup, with the same week’s coverage backed up by The Line of Best Fit and Stereogum.

Seabird has said the song grew out of a longer poem she wrote after a vivid dream while staying at a friend’s place in New Orleans, and that the record’s most emotional moments are instrumental rather than lyrical. On the song’s themes, she’s described these tracks as wrestling with “time and memory, our perception as it rolls forward” — the kind of dwelling that can feel like “a portal” back to where you once were.

Lightspheres on Their Way is due out physically on September 4, with a digital release following October 2, marking Seabird’s follow-up to the Vermont-rooted songwriting that’s drawn comparisons to Leonard Cohen.
