New Music Friday: of Montreal Return with 'Aethermead,' Widowspeak Drop 'Roses'
June’s first New Music Friday landed with a genuinely stacked slate. Athens indie-pop institution of Montreal kicked things off with Aethermead, the long-running project’s newest full-length, while Brooklyn’s Widowspeak quietly slipped out Roses the same morning — their signature reverb-soaked guitar tone intact.
Also out today: Tender’s Where the Waves Break and a collaborative record from Jared Mattson (Mattson 2) and Unknown Mortal Orchestra’s Ruban Nielson, simply titled Fear.
It’s the kind of Friday that makes a Spotify queue feel like a scavenger hunt — four distinct corners of the indie map, all dropping within hours of each other. We’ll be digging into which of these earns a full Crimson Review; for now, consider this your heads-up that they exist and are worth your lunch break.
