Some records are made in rooms. This one was made in a bunker. Jim Blaha — of The Blind Shake, Green/Blue, and Jim and the French Vanilla — spent roughly three and a half years alone in a cinder block basement in Minneapolis making Hang From A Cloud, playing every guitar, bass, drum, drum machine and vocal himself, tracking to a Tascam 388 on quarter-inch tape and then mixing the whole thing down to cassette. “It’s basically me trying to mix my moods onto cassette tape,” he told The Current. “I also have been trying to create the nostalgia I feel for mixtapes a friend used to make me back in my skateboarding days.”

The Low-End: The 388 does what 388s do — it rounds everything off and glues it together. Bass and drum machine sit fused into one soft, insistent pulse, and because the final bounce went to cassette, the whole bottom end has a gentle ceiling on it. Nothing here is trying to punch you. The Spatial Dynamics: This is headphone architecture built out of limitation. Guitars smear into the tape’s noise floor, vocals sit back rather than forward, and the result is a mix with genuine depth and almost no glare — the sound of a small cold room with the lights off.
Standout Performance
Blaha’s restraint. A multi-instrumentalist recording alone for years can easily overfill every bar; he does the opposite. Post-Trash nailed the trick: the record is “dark without becoming miserable, repetitive without becoming boring.” “Too Bright,” the first single, is the clearest case — a genuinely catchy song that never raises its voice to prove it.
Why It’s Certified
Post-Trash called it “dark, hazy, sometimes strange, and somehow one of the most relaxing records of 2026,” and that “somehow” is the achievement. From “Some New Day” to the closing “Careless,” ten tracks hold one mood without ever going slack. This is what patience sounds like when nobody is watching and nothing is rushing. Certified great.
