Panda Bear & Sonic Boom's 'A ? of WHEN' is a Sun-Dappled Marvel of Psych-Pop Craft
When Panda Bear and Sonic Boom made Reset in 2022, it felt like a one-off sugar rush. A ? of WHEN, out on Domino, is the harder and better record: a sequel in spirit that refuses to rerun the formula. Exclaim! called it “another stellar addition to that canon,” one that “keeps you entirely invested in this seemingly endless vat of creativity,” while Paste praised its “sun-dappled” arrangements and called it “a mirror of contemplation.” Noah Lennox handles the vocals; Peter Kember handles guitars and the low end; and Mary Lattimore’s harp threads gold through the whole thing.

The Low-End: Kember builds the foundation like the Spacemen 3 lifer he is — droning, patient, physical. It anchors songs that would otherwise float away, which is precisely the job in psych-pop this airy.
The Spatial Dynamics: This is a headphone carnival: Lattimore’s harp loops, steel drums, police sirens, and Stones-y guitar figures all orbiting Lennox’s reverb-hung voice. Every element gets its own shelf in the mix; nothing smears.
Standout Performance
Lennox’s vocals remain one of the great instruments in modern pop — hymn-like, generous, melodically restless. Against Kember’s textures he sounds both weightless and completely grounded.
Why It’s Certified
“Like a Moth to a Flame” and “Never Givin’ In” are instant canon for this duo, “Lucky Charm” and “Somethin’ That Lasts” earn their titles, and the title track ties the question mark into a bow.
