Yaphet arrived September 18th on Backwoodz Studioz, and Bandcamp Daily named it Album of the Day the same morning. The line that will follow the record around is theirs: “Castro assembles a veritable Murderers’ Row of underground rap talent, none of whom are keen to be the weak link.” billy woods, Fatboi Sharif, Blueprint, SKECH185, AJ Suede, PremRock, Margel the Sophant, ALASKA and Brian Ennals all turn up. Nobody coasts.

The Sonic Breakdown

The Production & Mix

The Low-End: Locust produced the album, with co-production from Castro, and the low end is the tell. Bandcamp Daily’s read is that “Locust is game to indulge his collaborator by giving him a diverse set of instrumentals,” and that diversity lives mostly under 200Hz — “Cheese N Bread Riddum” sits on an entirely different kind of bottom than “Railroad Spikes,” and the record never files them down into one house sound.

The Spatial Dynamics: iAlive mixed it and Willie Green mastered it, and that pairing is why a nine-voice guest list doesn’t turn to mud. Each feature gets its own pocket of depth rather than being stacked flat against Castro’s; the master leaves headroom where a louder record would have clipped the drums into the vocal.

Standout Performance

Castro himself. Bandcamp Daily puts it plainly — he “is as voracious a student of rap as anyone who has ever picked up a mic” — and the proof is structural: he hands the best guests on the roster the best beats and still doesn’t get outworked on his own album.

Why It’s Certified

⚡ “Black Don’t Crack,” “SuperDOPE” and “The Delectable Negro” are three completely different theses about what a Castro verse is for, and all three land.

🌈 “KOTTO,” “Enemy-Minded,” “Salem Baptist” and closer “Last Good Will” prove the sequencing isn’t a playlist — it’s an argument with a shape.

Certified great.
