doseone has been at this since he was rap battling an unknown Eminem in the ’90s — Deep Puddle Dynamics, cLOUDDEAD, NEVERMEN with Tunde Adebimpe and Mike Patton, co-owner of Anticon. sighting, out September 4th on HandsMade, teams him with producers Wino Willy and Zetroc, and it is billed as a “filmless” score that “never conjures the same sound twice, weaving poem bones, drum skin, and an analog blood into being.” That is exactly what it is.

The Sonic Breakdown

The Production & Mix

The Low-End: The record’s central production decision is subtraction. Bandcamp Daily’s Dusty Henry describes it as “a masterclass in restraint: the beats are low and rumbling, gloaming in the background to give doseone all the room he needs to spit his insidious rhymes.” Nothing competes with the voice. The label’s own shorthand for the division of labor is accurate — Wino Willy’s talking drums, Zetroc’s ever-evolving synths, doseone’s foreboding prose.

The Spatial Dynamics: Opener “Dark Yolk” sets the frame with what Henry calls “eerie synthesizer drones in the background” that “feel like the opening crawl to a film,” under the line “from darkness all things did form.” By “Hill Of Pills,” Henry notes, doseone “kicks into a higher gear, enunciating every word.” The dynamic range of the record lives almost entirely in his diction.

Standout Performance

doseone’s voice as a piece of processing in itself. Henry’s description is the one to keep: it “may start low, ominous, sinister, and self-assured before rising up to a high, mangled, demonic onslaught.” Two guests get in — ShrapKnel on “Dream Chase,” Teller Bank$ on “Those Crossroads” — and both are used as texture rather than relief.

Why It’s Certified

Go in order; this one is sequenced like a score and it pays off structurally. Henry marks the exact moment: “By the time they get to ‘Desert Measures,’ doseone is fully unleashed and all the buildup starts to pay off. It’s as thrilling as it is chilling.” Closer “Tired Promethean Fire” turns the dread outward onto board meetings and societal moral collapse, which is somehow the bleakest and funniest move on the record. Vinyl is an edition of 300. Certified great.
