The smartest decision on Melodie happened before a single note was tracked. As The Line of Best Fit put it: “Credit Slow Pulp for yielding some control to outside producer Elliott Kozel, who unlocks a hidden second gear.” God Is In The TV heard the result as a record where the band “sound like several different bands and enjoy all of them” — “hazy indie rock, shoegaze, scrappy power-pop and piano balladry.”

The Production & Mix

The Low-End: “Red Car” is the rhythm section’s showcase — Line of Best Fit credits “Teddy Mathews’ go-go beat and the supercharged bass of Alex Leeds.” It’s the kind of low end that makes a guitar band feel like it has a dance floor tucked in the back.

The Spatial Dynamics: Kozel lets the arrangements swing wildly in scale. “Better Man” starts with what God Is In The TV calls the “peculiar metallic ping of Stoehr hitting his guitar strings behind the bridge” before erupting into “crashing drums and great sheets of neon guitar” — a burst of “’80s guitar tone,” per Best Fit. Then “Not For Nothing” pulls all the way back to piano, Massey’s exposed vocal and “a plaintive banjo,” and “Slip Away” is “just Massey’s voice and Stoehr’s electric guitar.” Huge rooms and tiny rooms, same record.

Standout Performance

Henry Stoehr, whose guitar is the band’s chameleon — noise-wall one minute, lone electric under a whisper the next.

Track Highlights

⚡ “Better Man” — the ping, then the flood. Put it on loud.

⚡ The title track “rattles along with a slightly delinquent punk energy” (God Is In The TV).

🌈 “Up To You” is, per Best Fit, “an almost glacial slow burner but with a melody that never wavers.”

🌈 “Yellow and Green” opens things “pleasantly red-eyed and sleepy” — and hits harder once you know where the tracklist is going.

Certified great.
