Nate Amos has spent the last few years being quietly, then loudly, one of indie rock’s most reliable hook-smiths — first with Water From Your Eyes, then across This Is Lorelei’s run culminating in last year’s acclaimed “Holo Boy.” “Oh No Now My,” the first taste of his upcoming Matador debut “The Singer in My Band” (out September 11), might be the most immediate thing he’s put his name on yet.

The Sonic Breakdown

The Production & Mix

The whole track is built on a familiar 4-5-6-5 chord cycle, the kind of progression that’s been powering pop songs for seventy years, but Amos and his engineer refuse to let it sit still. The drums are mixed almost too loud on purpose — a pounding, primitive pattern that sits right up against the vocal, giving the song a stomping, live-in-the-room urgency rather than a polished studio sheen. It’s a smart choice: the simplicity of the beat is exactly what makes the chorus land like a gut punch instead of a whisper.

Standout Performance

Amos’s vocal is the record’s MVP here — he leans into the hook with a plainspoken, almost conversational delivery that makes the eventual swell feel earned rather than manufactured. There’s no vocal trickery covering for the songwriting; the songwriting simply doesn’t need it.

Track Highlights

⚡ The opening verse holds back on purpose, all restraint and space, so that when the full band finally locks in, the arrangement feels like a held breath finally let go.

🌈 The chorus hook is the whole show — a melody built to be shouted back at Amos from the front row, which, if the accompanying claymation video’s playful spirit is any indication, is exactly the point.

If this is the temperature check for “The Singer in My Band,” Matador picked well.
