Whelpwisher's '777' Is a Fuzz-Drenched Masterpiece of the Song-a-Day Grind

Here’s a work ethic we can get behind. Whelpwisher is, in Post-Trash’s words, “the anything goes solo project of Chicago’s Ben Grigg,” who you may know from Babe Report, Fckr Jr and Geronimo!. 777 collects, per its Bandcamp notes, “some of the best songs pulled from 3 two-week song-a-day projects stretching from November 2025 to June of 2026.” Grigg says those projects “helped me through a rough patch, and I’m glad to finally set them free.” Consider them freed — it landed September 18th.
The Sonic Breakdown
The Production & Mix
The Low-End: This is home-recorded fuzz punk, and the bottom of the mix is a warm, smeared wall rather than a polished kick-and-bass pocket. Post-Trash describes “distorted riffs” and “fuzzy punk decimation” — the low end is where the distortion pools.
The Spatial Dynamics: The trick of a song-a-day record is immediacy, and 777 keeps it. Post-Trash hears “swarming melodies,” “static bliss” and “syrupy shoegaze density” alongside “sing-a-long joy.” It’s a dense record that never forgets to leave a hook poking out of the noise.
Standout Performance
Grigg the editor. Writing a song a day is the easy part (okay, not easy). Picking the thirteen that survive — from “I Can’t Find the Door” to “Mount Stupid” — is what turns a notebook into an album.
Track Highlights
⚡ “Sunlight” — a melody Post-Trash says goes “chopping up and down like the friendliest chainsaw you’ve ever heard.”
⚡ “I Can’t Find the Door” opens the record at full swarm.
🌈 “Acceptance,” “Trazodone” and “About You” are where the fuzz goes gooey and the choruses sneak up on you.
Certified great.
